Scope Note: From the Poetry Foundation: "Not a single movement, but a constellation of writers and artists active in the San Francisco Bay Area at the end of World War II. Poets associated with the San Francisco Renaissance include Kenneth Rexroth, Robert Duncan, Robin Blaser, Jack Spicer, and Michael McClure. Though the poets wrote in different styles and often espoused different aesthetic and political views, all favored the Modernist tradition of innovation, and many were influenced by Charles Olson and the Black Mountain School. Donald Allen’s influential anthology The New American Poets included a section devoted to the “San Francisco Renaissance,” and many claim that by labeling the group, Allen in some way invented it. However, the poets writing in San Francisco at that time were active and influential across many genres, and often read and collaborated with one another." Abstract

Poet, filmmaker, and playwright James Richard Broughton (1913-1999) grew up in San Francisco and was educated at Stanford University. Alongside poets Kenneth Rexroth and Robert Duncan, he was a member of the San Francisco Renaissance movement. Hamilton and Mary Tyler befriended many writers, and were long time friends of Robert Duncan. This small file contains two letters to the Tylers (1962), two TMsS, and an inscribed broadside.

Abstract

The Robert Duncan collection comprises over 100 linear feet of manuscript material, correspondence, artwork, ephemera, audio visual material, and printed material related to Robert Duncan’s (1919-1988) life and work, including a significant amount of material related to his partner, Jess (1923-2004), a visual artist who often collaborated with Duncan.
