Scope and Contents

The Jayne Lyn Stahl collection contains materials related to the plays, writings and poetry of Jayne Lyn Stahl. Series I includes drafts of individual poems as well as anthologies such as Riding with Destiny and Notebook for the Martians. Series II consists of draft plays and screenplays including Shakespeare and Company, The Battle for Ulysses, and Blue Herring. Series III contains personal letters, recommendations for Jayne, resume, one photo, and PEN membership materials as well as essays on other topics such as politics. One autographed book from series III and two notebooks from Series I are included in box 4.

Biographical note

Jayne Lyn Stahl was a poet, playwright, and essayist. Jayne graduated with a Bachelors of the Arts in English from SUNY at Buffalo and earned her master’s in English at San Francisco State University. Beginning in 1967, Jayne Lyn Stahl wrote for many poetry publications including Exquisite Corpse, City Lights Review 2, Beatitute 33 the Silver Anniversary Issue, “Pulpsmith”, The Jacaranda Review, the New York Quarterly, Big Bridge, and her own poetry collection Riding with Destiny. As a playwright and screenwriter, she wrote Blue Herring (a 3 act play), Shakespeare & Company (a full length screenplay about Sylvia Beach and her efforts to publish James Joyces’s Ulysses), and The Battle for Ulysses (a stage play adaptation of screenplay Shakespeare & Company). In addition to her work with poetry and screenplays, Jayne wrote blogs posts and essays for the Huffington Post, AlterNet, the Atlantic Free Press, OpEd News, featured in Yahoo News and Google News. Jayne Lyn Stahl was an active member of PEN American center. Jayne Lyn Stahl passed away on March 21, 2013 at the age of 63.

The Jayne Lyn Stahl collection contains materials related to the plays, writings and poetry of Jayne Lyn Stahl. Jayne Lyn Stahl was a freelance poet, playwright, freelance essayist, and member of the PEN American Center. The collection includes draft poems, screenplays, letters, and other related materials.

Arrangement

The collection is divided into three series: Series I Poetry; Series II Plays/Screenplays; Series III Personal and Other Writings. Series I is arranged by date and title. Series II is arranged by title.

Acquisition Information

The Jayne Lyn Stahl collection donated to the Poetry Collection by Ellen Feinsand in March and April of 2013.
