Scope and Contents

The Gabrielle Bouliane collection includes materials related to the life and career of Gabrielle Bouliane as well as slam poetry events. Series I consists of brochures, information bulletins, letters, and Gabrielle's notes related to specific poetry slam events. Series II comprises of articles, letters, and ephemera from Gabrielle's own work as well as poetry slams in general.

Biographical note

Gabrielle Bouliane earned her associate’s degree in digital video production. After moving to Buffalo, NY with her family, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English and Publishing from the University at Buffalo in 1990. In 1992 Gabrielle Bouliane received her master’s degree in urban planning.

Gabriele Bouliane was heavily involved in the poetry slam community. In 1999 she was a member of the Seattle Poetry Slam Team. In 2005 she returned to Buffalo to found the Nickel City Poetry Slam with the Just Buffalo Literary Center. Gabrielle Bouliane also founded the Slip of the Tongue performance poetry ensemble group. On two occasions she organized and coached a Buffalo team of performance poets to the National Poetry Slam.

In addition to being a performance poet, Gabrielle Bouliane worked as a videographer recording slam poetry events. She worked as a videographer for Eleventh Hour Productions, Seattle, WA, from 2000 to 2002 and Poetry Slam, Inc., Chicago, IL from 2002 to 2008. She created the website LivePoets.com. Furthermore, Gabrielle Bouliane published three poetry chapbooks: I am another yourself; Here, Now; and It is always beginning.

Gabrielle Bouliane was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2009 giving her last performance on December 9th. She passed away in January of 2010.

The Gabrielle Bouliane collection includes materials related to the life and career of Gabrielle Bouliane as well as slam poetry events. Gabrielle Bouliane was a performance poet who performed at several National Poetry Slams and founded the Nickel City Slam. The collection materials includes ephemera and articles related to slam poetry events as well as notes and other written materials by Gabrielle Bouliane.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into two series: I. Poetry Slams; II. Ephemera and Written Works. Series I is arranged chronologically and Series II is arranged by type of content. Box 3 contains audio and visual materials which are part of Series I.

Acquisition Information

The Gabrielle Bouliane collection was donated to the Poetry Collection by Gretchen Bouliane in February 2010.
