Overview

Emery George, born in Hungary in 1933 and naturalized as an American citizen in 1954, is a prolific poet, translator, and scholar of Germanic literature. His collection contains manuscripts of original and translated poetry, published works, and business correspondence.

Biographical Note

Emery Edward George was born on May 8, 1933 in Budapest, Hungary. He came to the United States in 1946 and was naturalized as a citizen in 1954. He attended the University of Michigan, where he studied Germanic language and literature. He received a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in 1955, 1959, and 1964, respectively. He held a two-year appointment at the University of Illinois before returning to the University of Michigan, where he taught from 1966 to 1988.

Emery George is an internationally renowned scholar, poet, and translator. He has published several volumes of original poetry including Black Jesus (1974), Voiceprints (1987), Blackbird (1993), and poetic translations including Miklós Radnóti: A Comparative Study (1993), Metropolitan Icons: Selective Poems of János Pilinszky in Hungarian and in English (1995). In addition, he served as an editor for poetic anthologies including Contemporary East European Poetry (1994).
