Historical Note
Robert J. Bertholf solicited materials from Italian visual poets for the Poetry Collection in 1990. Visual and concrete poets offered exhibition announcements, catalogs, original works, and other material in response to his interest. Italian visual poetry, or "poesia visiva," came to prominence in the late 1950s and 1960s, and several of its major figures are represented here.
