Intrepid collection
Scope and Content Note
The Intrepid collection is comprised of the personal correspondence and manuscripts of Allen De Loach, including some material pertaining to the literary scene in Buffalo, as well as the working papers, business records, correspondence, and manuscripts relating to both the complete life of Intrepid (1964-1980) and the publication of The East Side Scene (1968, 1972).
De Loach's correspondence includes letters from Paul Blackburn, Ed Dorn, Robert Duncan, Gerard Malanga, Eric Mottram, Louis Zukofsky, William Burroughs, Gregory Corso, Allen Ginsberg, Walter Lowenfels, and John Wieners.
The files of Intrepid include correspondence and manuscripts (some 100 of which are signed and/or with the author's revisions) from writers such as Robert Creeley, George Economou, Joel Oppenheimer, Ed Sanders, Michael McClure, Jeff Nuttall, Ted Enslin, and Philip Whalen. All together, the Intrepid collection contain approximately 4,000 letters and 3,000 manuscripts.

Historical Note
Edited by Allen De Loach in New York (issues 1-5) and then Buffalo (issues 6-41), Intrepid (1964-1980) published a large number of poets directly and indirectly associated with the New American Poetry, and especially Beat writers. Contributors included a long list of such influential figures as Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), Philip Whalen, William Burroughs, Diane di Prima, Charles Bukowski, Ted Berrigan, Gary Snyder, Ted Enslin, and Charles Olson.
The magazine published a number of special issues on topics ranging from jazz poetry to Indian poetry, William Burroughs, Canadian poetry, and William Carlos Williams. In 1968 De Loach edited The East Side Scene, an anthology of poetry from New York's Lower East Side during the 1960s. His Intrepid Press also published books by Paul Blackburn, Eric Mottram, Peter Orlovsky, and others.
