Scope and Content Note
The Athanor collection contains all of the papers relating to the publishing history of the magazine, including manuscript submissions; the editor's correspondence from the authors involved; and business documents such as subscription lists, purchase orders, and expenses.

Historical Note
Edited by Douglas Calhoun with George F. Butterick as Contributing Editor, Athanor published six issues of poetry, essays, prose, interviews, reviews, and photographs between Winter/Spring 1971 and Spring 1975. Issues 1 and 2 were produced in LeRoy, New York and the rest in Clarkson, New York. Contributors included Cid Corman, Anselm Hollo, Larry Eigner, Charles Olson, and Robert Creeley. The first five issues contain as an insert a "microbook" pamphlet published by Athanor Books: 1. Edward Dorn, Spectrum Breakdown; 2. Larry Eigner, circuit s; 3. Keith Wilson, Song of Thantog; 4. John Wieners, Yonnie; 5. Anselm Hollo, American Mirrors. The first three issues feature a serialized interview with Jack Kerouac.
