Campus Planning Committee records
Scope and Content Note
These are the files of Bradley Chapin, former Dean of University College, who chaired a committee which conducted a survey of projected facility needs in response to the consultant Heldman report. Various campus units responded to this survey and their reports and responses reflect concepts of what the University projected in terms of academic plans, translated into space needs, during the period after the merger and before the Amherst campus planning really got underway. This material pertains only to the core campus exclusive of Health Sciences. The records deal with the period following the decision to move the University to the Amherst site, and prior to temporary cessation of planning to reconsider the site question. A consultant firm visited the campus to discover facility needs for the future. The resulting Heldman report was then reviewed by departments and offices, and Bradley Chapin was asked by Lester Anderson, Academic Vice President, to take on the job of interpreting the report and collecting reactions. The Heldman report was revised and revisions are shown in these records. However, the actual Heldman report is not included. Around 1966, all planning stopped and the location of the site of the new campus was reconsidered. When planning resumed, Office of Planning and Development [Facilities Planning] became responsible.
See also 8/1/50, Office of Planning and Development Records, 1964-1966, which has files from The Campus Planning Committee and deals with assessing space needs. This Chapin file, however, deals with an earlier period and seems to be less concerned with the Albany and SUNY aspects of the development of the Amherst campus than the later files. That is, this Chapin material may be intended to produce reports for Albany, but correspondence and reports to SUNY officials seldom appear.
