Historical Note

Cora P. Maloney College (CPMC), chartered in 1976, is a unique College at the University at Buffalo. CPMC is designed to provide undergraduate students with academic and residential experiences from a community perspective. CPMC focuses on the educational issues of academic achievement and excellence, cultural and social awareness, civic engagement and student enrichment. Each year CPMC offers elective courses, workshops, speakers, and events for the university community.

The college is named after Cora P. Maloney, a resident of the City of Buffalo who was active in community, educational, and political affairs. She was a strong advocate of educational equality and excellence, and community awareness, becoming the first woman and African-American elected to the Masten District of the Buffalo Common Council in 1957. Mrs. Maloney was also the first Democrat ever to be elected in the Masten district as well as the first African-American to be elected in the district in 20 years.
