Historical Note

In June 1934, the Committee on General Administration of the University of Buffalo Council created a Division of Student Health, Physical Education and Intercollegiate Athletics. To coordinate the departments within this division and to determine general policy, a Faculty Committee on Policy and Coordination was established. At the same time the by-laws of the Athletic Council were amended so that the Faculty Committee on Policy would assume the duties of the old Faculty Committee on Student Activities pertaining to athletic eligibility and discipline.

The Faculty Committee on Policy and Coordination was responsible for athletic schedules, discipline, eligibility and equipment. Its members were appointed by the chancellor.

After W.W. II, the Faculty Committee on Policy and Coordination was called the “Faculty Committee on the Administrative Direction of Student Health, Physical Education and Intercollegiate Athletics.” by 1950, this committee came to be called the “Athletic Policy Committee.”

Whatever the name of the committee, its duties were essentially the same, overseeing the athletic program at the University of Buffalo. In spite of the authority the committee had over Student Health and Physical Education, there is little material in the records to indicate that the committee exercised its authority.
