Historical Note
In 1958, the University at Buffalo football team reached a milestone in its 102 year history. With a record of 8-1-0 the team won the Lambert Cup, the trophy which was awarded to the best small college football program. This was followed by an invitation to play in the Tangerine Bowl, the first bowl invitation in the team’s history. The invitation was unanimously turned down by the team when it was learned that their two African-American players would not be allowed to play.
Exactly fifty years later, the University at Buffalo football team received its second bowl game invitation. After winning the Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship, the team was invited to play the University of Connecticut in the International Bowl. Leading up to this game, a great deal of media coverage followed the stories of the current, up and coming football program as well as the historic 1958 team.
