Historical Note

Graphic designer Ivan Chermayeff designed a seal for the University at Buffalo in 1967. Its first use was for the inauguration of UB President Martin Meyerson on May 29, 1967.

The design, a radial cluster of books, symbolized the integration of knowledge achieved through the diverse faculties of the university.

Chermayeff's design served as the university seal until 1982.
