Historical Note

This case grew out of a controversy involving Dr. James Platt White's use of a live birth as a demonstration for a medical class on January 18, 1850. For an account of the controversy, see Oliver P. Jones' article in the 'Buffalo Physician' (Spring 1974) entitled OUR FIRST PROFESSOR OF OBSTETRICS JAMES PLATT WHITE (1811-1881).
