Abstract

Papers of Raymond H. Ewell, professor of chemical engineering and vice president for research at University at Buffalo. Contains correspondence, reports, articles, and research notes, related to his professional work from the 1950s to mid 1970s, including his research on the USSR, India, and food/fertilizer production.

Biographical Note

Dr. Raymond H. Ewell was born in Brockton, Massachusetts. He earned a bachelor of science from the University of Toledo (1928), master of science from Purdue (1930), master of arts from George Washington (1935), and a doctorate in chemical engineering from Princeton (1937).

His prolific professional career spanned 50 years. He began as a junior chemist and photographer in the Mineral Products Division of the National Bureau of Standards in 1930. Later, he was professor of chemistry at Purdue, worked for the National Defense Research Committee during WWII, was a chemical economist at Shell Chemical, managed the Stanford Research Institute's Chemical Economics Service, served as assistant director of the National Science Foundation, and was a consultant to the governments of India and the Philippines.

Ewell came to the then private University of Buffalo in 1957. Locally, he was a member of the Buffalo Saturn Club, and served on the Board of Directors for Planned Parenthood of Buffalo, the Nichols School, International Institute of Buffalo, WNY Research Center, and Research for Health in Erie County.

He published over 100 articles, reports, and chapters of books on chemistry, chemical engineering, economics and planning of research, industrial development of India, Soviet science and education, and world food and population problems.

Ewell retired from UB in 1970. He died on July 27, 1978 in Amherst, New York.

Acquisition Information

The Raymond H. Ewell papers were gifted to University Archives in two accessions: 78-051 (1978) and 81-010 (1981).
