Biographical Note

Gregory B. Jarvis was one of the seven crew members of the US Space Shuttle Challenger which exploded on January 28, 1986, killing all aboard. Greg Jarvis received his B.A. in Electrical Engineering in 1967, and was a speaker at the 1985 graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences. On the fatal flight, Jarvis had taken with him a flag of the University at Buffalo which he intended to return to the University.

Jarvis was honored posthumously by the University at Buffalo on May 17, 1986, with an honorary Doctor of Science degree and Distinguished Citizens Award. On October 12, 1987, the Mechanical and Civil Engineering building was named the Gregory B. Jarvis Hall. At the dedication ceremony his widow, Marcia Jarboe Jarvis, also a graduate of the University at Buffalo, presented the University with a commemorative plaque from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the UB flag which was recovered along with other wreckage from the Challenger explosion.
