Historical Note
(Relating only to the proposed Combined University Hospital and Health Science Centers of Series II and III, 1967-1978)
When the University of Buffalo merged with the State University of New York system in 1962, many plans were made for an expansion of the School of Medicine. "A new University Hospital of 350 beds is being planned in conjunction with a Health Sciences Center as part of the proposed new State University of New York at Buffalo," said Dr. Edward F. Marra in a form letter for an administrator search in1967.
In expectations for the expansion, the Medical School hired Lester Gorsline Associates, planning consultants for scientific, health education and hospital facilities to begin drawing up estimates and early plans for a combined Erie County and University hospital. Many committees were involved in making decisions for the new Health Sciences Center and combined University Hospital including the Curriculum Committee, the Clinical Council and Executive Committees.
Clinical Council: The Clinical Council acted as a liaison between the School of Medicine and area hospitals by coordinating educational activities. It was the responsibility of this committee to review and select area hospitals as educational affiliates, and then to set policy in regard to the administration of planning and operation. The committee also made decisions as to which clinical areas would be available for residency appointments and appointed teaching-doctors to be on staff at selected hospitals.
Combined Campus University Hospital Planning Committee: The University Hospital Planning Committee was created to research the feasibility of a combined Erie County and University hospital from reports from the Clinical Council. This committee was responsible for projecting the physical requirements for the Combined Hospital, the administrative policy guidelines, the in-hospital service core availability, and the financial requirements of the project.
