Historical Note
The World University Games, also known as Universiade, is an international athletic, educational, and cultural festival held each two years at different International cities since 1959. Organized by International University Sports Federation (FISU), the Summer World University Games consist of 10 compulsory sports and 3 additional sports chosen by the host country.
Summer World University Games XVII were held in Buffalo, New York in July 1993, which was the first time the games held in the United States. The GBAC was formed in 1988 to bid for the Games for Buffalo, and Buffalo was awarded the Games in 1989 by FISU. Ronald Stein, SUNY at Buffalo Vice President for University Advancement and Development, was in charge of the Education and Medical divisions of the games.
