Boxes 1-4 contain acquisition of specific plots of land and are arranged alphabetically by surname or corporate name. Contents of individual folders vary but most include copies of routine correspondence between the state, University representatives and/or property owners outlining the progress of the proposed land acquisition, including notices of transaction, payment authorizations and letters of payment, all originating at the central offices of the State University of New York in Albany, New York; additional correspondence pertaining to the specific acquisition proposal, including items such as inspection notices, requests for continued residence and schedules of transferal; an area map showing the location of the affected property.
The remaining files in Boxes 4 and 5 include correspondence, files on disposition or disposal of surplus buildings and grounds, building inspection reports, maps, and other property information.
The materials in folders 4.22-4.23 concern both the acquisition of land for the Amherst campus site and the subsequent development of planning for the site, including preliminary reports of the space requirements of academic departments. The folders appear to have been kept by John R.
