Overview
Historical Note
The School of Pharmacy Alumni Association, founded in 1889, is the University at Buffalo's second-oldest alumni organization. An independent organization, the Alumni Association fund-raises, organizes, and pays for events separate from the University or the School of Pharmacy.
"The Alumni Association's main goal is to further the interest of the School of Pharmacy. In their first meeting minutes on March 27, 1889 it was written that: "The objects of the association shall be to further the interests of its Alma Mater, to bring its members into closer fellowship, to promote sociability and good feeling among them, and to assist in elevating the standards of Pharmacy."
(-- 1.1 Secretary's meeting minutes, 1889-1958)
Dean Willis Gregory ran the Association's first meetings until 1891 when the first president, William O. Jaeger, was elected. By 1912 the Association had grown to over 600 members.
One of the largest annual events organized by the Alumni Association is the Spring Clinic Day and Alumni Reunion Dinners. These events have included over the years: featured speakers, business meetings, and an induction of the graduating class. The first official Spring Clinic Day was held in Foster Hall April 1938 and was held with the Alumni Dinner which had at that time been an annual event, but the dinner had been taking place annually since 1891.
Although the Alumni Association is a social organization, they also have provided many services to both the alumni and the present student body over the years including: continuing education services, scholarships, short time, interest-free loans for students, and awards and contests
Arrangement
Acquisition Information
This open collection is a combination of accessions transferred to the University Archives by Assistant to the Dean of Pharmacy, Harold Reiss. Accession #77-012 were the records of the Association from 1889-1976. They were originally kept by Executive Secretary, Dean A.B. Lemon (1890-1969) and later by Dean Lemon's successor, Howard Kohler. Following Kohler's death in 1976, the records were preserved by Reiss and transferred to the Archives on May 11 and June 13, 1977. Those records were processed in 1985 by Assistant Archivist, Christopher Densmore.
Accession #90-022 was a later accession from Reiss of the Association's records from 1970-1989. These were merged with the earlier records and re-organized to operate as an open collection by Processing Archivist, Jessica Tanny in January 2005.
