Historical Note
The Academy of American Poets (AAP) University and College Poetry Prize is open to University at Buffalo graduate and undergraduate students. Winning poems are published by AAP and appear on the University Libraries website.
The Academy of American Poets was founded in 1934 to support American poets in all stages of their careers and to foster the appreciation of contemporary poetry. The Academy sponsors national programs and several of the most important awards for poetry in the United States. The University and College Poetry Prizes were established in 1955 and are now offered at over 200 colleges and universities each year.
The Academy of American Poets Prize was first offered at the University at Buffalo in 1974 and is now awarded annually for the best poem or collection of poems submitted by a UB undergraduate or graduate student. The Dan Liberthson Poetry Prize was established in 2010 and is awarded annually for the best poem or collection of poems submitted by a UB graduate student. The Friends of the University Libraries Undergraduate Poetry Prize, unafilliated with the AAP, is awarded annually for the best poem or collection of poems submitted by a UB undergraduate student.
No competition was held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The UB Student Poetry Prizes competition was held virtually for the first time in 2021.
