Manuscript Diary Kept by E.C. Pearman on Thackeray's second and last trip to the United States
Scope and Contents
The collection contains the journal kept by E. Charles Pearman. The following is taken from a book sales catalog description pasted on the journal's protective covering: Charles Pearman accompanied Thackeray on his second lecture tour in America, and his diary begins with the departure from England on October 13, 1855, on the "Africa." He gives his impressions of American very frankly, tells of Thackeray's movements from city to city - the only account we have - and gives numerous interesting accounts of the happenings in various places, including his sensations at a sale of negro slaves in the South...The diary is entirely unpublished, and furnishes a perfectly natural account of the happenings on this journey. As it was not intended to be perused or published the writer has been delightfully frank and honest in his opinions.
