Historical Note
The Young Men's Association was established in Buffalo, New York on
February 22, 1836, "for mutual improvement in literature and science." For the
first 25 years it was the only public literary institution and gave rise to the
Buffalo Historical Society, the Fine Arts Academy, and the Society of Natural
Sciences. In 2010, these organizations are the Buffalo and Erie
County Historical Society, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and the Buffalo Museum of
Science.
In 1886, the Association changed its name to The Buffalo Library. In
1897, through a contract with the City it became the Buffalo Public Library,
today known as the Buffalo and Erie
County Public Library.
