Historical Note
After the end of World War II, the Women's Club of the University of Buffalo began a relief project the aim of which was to aid families of university professors in Germany, Austria, France, England, the Netherlands, Italy, Japan, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Greece, and other countries devastated during the war. The project was chaired by Mitzie Maclup, wife of Dr. Fritz Maclup, in 1946-1947. Mrs. John D. Sumner chaired the Relief Project from November 1947 until its termination in 1949. Working in neighborhood groups, members of the Women's Club collected, packaged, and distributed food and clothing to families of faculty members. Initially, recommendations of needy families were made primarily by faculty members at the University of Buffalo and later by the initial recipients and various relief agencies.
