Historical Note

Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious undergraduate liberal arts honors society in the United States which celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts — the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. The University at Buffalo chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron to New York was extrablished in 1938. Chapter presidents since 1968 are as follows: Dr. John C. Lane (before 1968-1971); Dr. Claude Welch (1971-1993); Dr. Barbara Bono (1993-2015); Dr. Pat McDevitt (2015-2018); Dr. Shelley Kimelberg (2018-2022).
