Historical Note

When the Department of Geography's founding chair, Charles H.V. Ebert came to the University of Buffalo, he noticed that there was no standalone department for the study of geography. Rather, it was subsumed by the Department of Geology. Seeing that only two other New York State institutions offered Ph.D. programs in geography, Ebert approached chancellor Clifford Furnas with the idea of forming a geology program.

In the fall of 1963, Geography became its own standing department, though it only had two geographers, one graduate assistant, and ten undergraduate students. By its 25th anniversary celebration in 1989, the department had expanded to include 18 faculty, 100 undergraduate students, 60 master's students, and around 26 Ph.D. candidates.

The Department of Geography began delivering departmental updates in the form of a newsletter in 1995. In 2005, The Compass began as the department's official newsletter, which is now published online on the Department of Geography website.
