Historical Note

The Baldy Center was named for Christopher Baldy, a 1910 graduate of the Buffalo School of Law who left a substantial endowment to the University at Buffalo after his death in 1959. In 1973, Erie County Surrogate Judge William J. Regan, another graduate of the law school, signed a decree allowing UB to use Baldy’s endowment for an interdisciplinary program in law and social policy. The Law and Society Association held its first meeting in 1975 and became the Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy in 1978.

In Fall 2020, the center released its inaugural issue of The Baldy Center Magazine, a virtual periodical focused on delivering news related to Baldy Center research and activities. The magazine is released once a semester.
