Contains analog and digital records of the Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender records, including: planning and promotional materials for workshops, lectures, conferences, celebrations, and other events; annual reports and drafts; information on IREWG grants, scholarships, and other awards; lists and descriptions of courses and curricula related to women and gender, including the Women's Studies program; documents related to Institute promotion and outreach, including scholar interviews and the "Gender Matters' podcast; records from program collaborations and co-sponsorships; text drafts and final copies of newsletters, Listserv postings, brochures, and other publications; agendas, meeting minutes, and directories for IREWG committees, subcommittees, and focus groups; and records related to the administrative operations of the institute.

Also contains audiovisual material including VHS copies of films and IREWG events as well as streaming video of the 2005 Conference on Military Culture and Gender.

Historical Note

The University at Buffalo Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender (IREWG), also known as the Gender Institute, began in 1997 as a reimagining of its precursor, the Graduate Group for Feminist Studies. Funded by the Office of the Provost, the Gender Institute advances its mission to promote, celebrate, and enhance gender-related scholarly research and teaching through grant programs, co-sponsorships, networking, lectures, workshops, conferences, and community events, including the International Women's Film Festival, the Annual Celebration of Scholarship on Women and Gender, the Gender Across Borders conference, and the IREWG Lecture Series. Membership is open to UB faculty, staff, and students as well as members of the surrounding local community who are interested in research and education devoted to issues related to women and gender.

Arrangement

Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender records, 1997-2020 are arranged into eight series: I. Administrative records, 1994-2019; II. Audiovisual, 1988-2006; III. Awards, 1997-2011; IV. Conferences and events, 1997-2020; V. Courses and programs, 2000-2018; VI. Digital Humanities Institute of Buffalo, 1997-2013; VII. Mentoring, 2008; and VIII. Publications, 1998-2020.

Digital files are arranged in the order in which they were created by the Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender. Some folder titles were altered and file arrangement reorganized to assist researchers in locating and identifying digital content.

Acquisition Information

The Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender records were gifted to University Archives by Rebekah Burke on behalf of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IREWG) in October 2020 as accessions 2020-014 and accession 2018-021.

Digital files created by the Gender Institute were transferred to the University Archives on DVDs and via internet transfer. Where possible, digital content saved on storage media was migrated from the storage media, normalized to standard preservation and access formats, and transferred to a stable preservation environment following the University Libraries' Digital Preservation guidelines. Some folder titles were altered and file arrangement reorganized to assist researchers in locating and identifying digital content.

Analog materials were transferred to the University Archives over multiple accessions 2013-2017, and were arranged according to original order of the Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender. Some folder titles were altered, and file arrangement reorganized to assist researchers in locating and identifying content.

Analog posters discarded when digital copies exist.
