Historical Note
The School of Pedagogy at the University of Buffalo was established in 1895 for the formal teaching of education. The specific goal of the School was to train individuals who were interested in becoming school principals and administrators. The School was envisioned by Frank M. McMurry, principal of the Franklin School in Buffalo; the Franklin School served as the model school for University students until it merged with the Elmwood School in 1898 and the School of Pedagogy was forced to close. At the time, the University's School of Pedagogy was one of four in the country and was given equal status with the other departments of the University.
