Department of Mathematics Records, 1929-1991 (inclusive), 1979-1990 (bulk) are open for research, except for Grievance cases (students), Box 8, Folders 13-14, which are closed to researchers until 2060.

Use Restrictions

University records are public records and once fully processed are generally open for research. Access to student and personnel records is restricted for 80 years from the date of creation. See reference staff for details. No restrictions on access apply to published records. Most papers may be copied in accordance with the archives' usual procedures unless otherwise specified.

Collection of materials from the FNSM, Mathematics Department during Lewis A. Coburn's tenure as Chairman, 1979-1990.

Historical Note

The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics: This Faculty shall consist of the faculty of the following departments in the present college of Arts and Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Geological Sciences, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, Statistics; and of those departments, programs, and other units which may from time to time be associated with said Faculty.

On July 1, 1998, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics merged into the new College of Arts and Sciences (see Record Group 50, College of Arts and Sciences).

Arrangement

The papers are organized first alphabetically by subject and then chronologically within each subject. Specific correspondence is filed with its relevant subject. There are overlaps chronologically between academic terms.

The Library: Mathematical Sciences Collection, SEL/CML files were weeded for duplicates and put in chronological order. The correspondence that directly dealt with the mathematical department were retained in 20/7/831. Those documents that pertained to the libraries in general were removed to the library records in record group 13.

Acquisition Information

Accession 93-005 was merged with accession 2000-xxx. Processor later broke the accession into two separate collections: 20/7/831, department records and 20/7/834, personnel files.

Accruals and Additions
