Historical Note

The Buffalo Dental Association was organized on May 23, 1864 for the purpose of cultivating and disseminating the science and art of dentistry and to represent the common interests of the dental profession. The Dental Association conducted regular monthly meetings which were primarily devoted to the discussion of dental methods and problems.

The Dental Association and the University of Buffalo

In 1868, the members of the Association saw a need for the formation of a dental school in conjunction with the University of Buffalo. A committee was formed to discuss and resolve this need. Despite the recommendations of the committee, there was not yet sufficient support for the idea to warrant any action. In 1892, Dr. William C. Barrett, a member of the Buffalo Dental Association and former President of the American Dental Association, successfully headed a movement to establish the School of Dentistry at the University of Buffalo.
