Scope and Contents
Records, 1983-1987, concerning the Empire State Games, a New York State amateur athletic competition, hosted by the University at Buffalo in 1985 and 1986. Included are proposals, background materials, reports correspondence, memoranda, schedules, programs, concerning the planning and administration of the games in Buffalo. These records reflect the work of the Empire State Games Local Organizing Committee, the U/B Empire State Games Steering Committee, and the UB Office of Public Affairs, and particularly the involvement of Richard Baldwin, Associate Director of Public Affairs. The files include information on the 1983 and 1984 games held in Syracuse.

Historical Note
The Empire State Games (ESG) are an annual Olympic-style athletic competition open to amateur athletes from New York State. Athletes represent 6 geographic regions: Adirondack, Central, Hudson Valley, Long Island, New York City, and Western. The first games were held in 1978, and the competitions in 1985 and 1986 were held at the State University of New York at Buffalo. The 1985 games were held August 7-11, 1985, and the 1986 games were held August 6-10, 1986. The 1985 and 1986 ESG were planned and coordinated by the Empire State Games Local Organizing Committee and by the U/B Empire State Games Steering Committee, with the assistance of Richard Baldwin, Associate Director, UB Office of Public Affairs. Other ESG competitions include the Winter Games, Senior Games, and Games for the Physically Challenged.
