Scope and Contents
Photographs of Steven B. Sample as University at Buffalo President, showing Sample at university events. Sample was President from 1982-1991. Photos include University commencements, dinners, building dedications, meetings, homecomings, local politicians and notables, sports, visitors, speakers, delegations, and other events. Notable people present in the collection include designer Serge Chermayeff, conductor Semyon Bychkov, diplomat Henry Kissinger, poets John Montague and Robert Creeley, reporters Leslie Stahl and Tom Brokaw, Presidents Jimmy Carter and Nelson Mandela, activist Andrew Young, and astronomer Carl Sagan.
Photos are primarily 3 x 5 inch color prints with some 8 x 10 inch enlargements. There are two sets of photographs. The second set, contained in nine manuscript boxes, are duplicates and/or variants of the main collection stored in binders. Box 9 also includes some undated and/or unidentified prints and negatives.
The collection list is of the photographs in the binders. Those photos marked with and asterisk are also in the boxes. Photographers for Public Affairs took most of the photos; the public affairs photograph file number is included on the container list.

Biographical Note
An electrical engineer who is known for his patents on various digital control panels including the touch pad on microwaves used all over the world, Sample became the University's twelfth President in 1982. He led the University to greater levels of recognition, as reflected in UB's election to the prestigious Association of American Universities.
After leaving the University at Buffalo in 1991, he became the tenth President of the University of Southern California. In 2001, Sample wrote The Contrarian's Guide to Leadership, voted as one of the top 10 business books of that year.
In 2004, the Sample received the "Chancellor's Medal," the most prestigious award given by the University bestowed to individuals whose accomplishments have greatly added to the prestige of the city of Buffalo and often to the University as well.
