The Department of Modern Languages [and Literatures] was established in 1977 from the merger of the: Dept. of French, Dept. of Germanic and Slavic, and Dept. of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese (Reporter, June 9, 1977). The Dept. of Modern Languages and Literatures split into two parts in 2002: Dept. of Linguistics (German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, and the World Languages Institute which offers instruction in American Sign Language, Arabic, Danish, Modern Greek, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Irish Gaelic, Swahili, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese) and The Dept. of Romance Languages & Literatures (French, Italian, Spanish, and Latina/o studies).
