The Vietnamese Immigration Collection documents the experience of Vietnamese nationals who left their country during the collapse of the South Vietnamese government in April 1975, and were subsequently resettled in the United States following an orientation period in refugee camps at Camp Pendleton, California, Fort Indian Town Gap, Pennsylvania, and others.

This collection was assembled by Dr. Gail Paradise Kelly and others as documentation for her book From Vietnam to America: A chronicle of Vietnamese Immigration to the United States, which was published by Westview Press, Boulder, Co, in 1977.

Printed materials include English and Vietnamese language newspapers Doi Song Moi (Refugee Task Force), Dat Lanh (Fort Indian Town Gap), Chan Tri Moi (Guam), and Thong Bao (Camp Pendleton) published fir the benefit of the refugees. Also included are governmental reports on Vietnamese immigration by the Interagency Task Force, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare's Refugee Task Force, and other agencies.

Of particular significance are orientation and sponsorship materials used at Camp Pendleton and Fort Indian Town Gap, much of which pertains to educational programs acculturating the Vietnamese to life in the United States.

The manuscript material consists of a small amount of correspondence with "VOLAGS" (voluntary agencies) soliciting material for Dr. Kelly's study, the first draft of the book, with comments from persons who had worked with the Vietnamese immigrants and from Dr. Kelly's colleagues at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the final draft of the book.

The collection contains 82 cassette tapes of interviews with Vietnamese immigrants from various levels of society, conducted in both Vietnamese and English; interviews with case workers and other persons connected with the relief agencies; interviews with civilian and military workers in the camps, including administrators, aids, teachers, and others; and tapes of classroom instruction and social events in the camps.
