Contains digital video of the Honorary Degree Conferral of Doctor for Humane Letters to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, and His Holiness’ Distinguished Speakers Series lecture on September 19, 2006 in the University at Buffalo Stadium.

Event begins as the platform party takes the stage (00:00), followed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama (04:00). Opening remarks by President John B. Simpson (06:00). Honorary Degree Conferral for His Holiness by SUNY Chancellor John B. Ryan (10:45) followed by His Holiness’ remarks on the degree in his native language, and in English, with translations by Thupten Jinpa (12:15). His Holiness then moves to his speech for the Distinguished Speakers Series (16:10). Speech topics include: the right to a successful life (18:30), human emotions and enduring pain (24:00), compassion (33:00), negatives of anger (43:00), warm-heartedness (55:00). Speech followed by a question and answer session with pre-selected questions moderated by the Vice Provost for International Education, Stephen Dunnett (1:10:30). Questions include: What can each of us do right now to ensure a better tomorrow? (1:11:00); How does one balance compassion and suffering? (1:12:00); What is your opinion of the United States on a global scene? (1:17:30); What is the greatest piece of advice you ever received? (1:23:10); Will you ever have the chance to return to Tibet, even under certain circumstances? (1:25:00); Conclusion remarks by John B. Simpson (1:31:00). Video ends (1:34:36).

Processing Information

Digital files created by William Regan and the Office of Special Events were transferred to the University Archives on various types of storage media including compact discs and digital optical discs. Where possible, digital content saved on storage media was migrated from the storage media, normalized to standard preservation and access formats, and transferred to a stable preservation environment following the University Libraries' Digital Preservation guidelines. Some folder titles and file titles were altered to assist researchers in locating and identifying digital content.
