Contains digital video of brothers and former astronauts Mark Kelly and Scott Kelly’s appearance on September 22, 2016 in Alumni Arena as part of the 2016-2017 Distinguished Speakers Series.

Event beings with a video retrospective of the Distinguished Speakers Series (02:00). Introduction to the event by University at Buffalo President, Satish K. Tripathi (04:45), followed by an introduction for the speakers by aerospace engineering student, Maura Sutherland (07:50), and a video montage of the speakers’ work (09:55). Introductions followed by speech given by both Mark Kelly and Scott Kelly (13:20). Speech topics include: growing up (16:30), training, education and early days as pilots (20:30), stories from the Navy (29:00), first missions as astronauts (39:00), Gabby Giffords (46:50), living on the International Space Station for one year (52:00), evaluating risks and perspective (1:03:30), and conclusion remarks (1:11:00). Speech followed by a question and answer session moderated by the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Scott Weber, and the Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Kemper Lewis (1:12:00). Questions include: What was the strangest thing you saw in space? (1:13:45); What would you say that is being researched right now on International Space Station will have the biggest impact? (1:16:40); If you could predict the future, what is the next “Man on the Moon” event? (1:18:30); What is the biggest challenge to going to Mars? (1:19:50); What was the most remarkable event that happened to you in space? (1:21:29); Do you think space strengthened your relationship as brothers? (1:23:19); How would you compare missions in terms of danger? (1:23:50); What was the feeling on training for the mission after the Columbia disaster? (1:26:20) How do you combat microgravity on your mission? (1:27:50); Do have any advice for teachers on how to motivate students? (1:29:50); Can you share some experiences from working with astronauts from all over the world? (1:31:29); How has the beauty of space changed your perspective of the world? (1:33:10). Processing Information

Digital files created by William Regan and the Office of Special Events were transferred to the University Archives on various types of storage media including compact discs and digital optical discs. Where possible, digital content saved on storage media was migrated from the storage media, normalized to standard preservation and access formats, and transferred to a stable preservation environment following the University Libraries' Digital Preservation guidelines. Some folder titles and file titles were altered to assist researchers in locating and identifying digital content.
