Contains digital video of attorney and law professor Charles Ogletree’s appearance on February 11, 2016 in Alumni Arena as part of the 2015-2016 Distinguished Speakers Series and the 40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Event.

Introduction to the event, presentation of scholarship recipients, and introduction to the speaker by the President of the Minority Faculty and Staff Association, Jerry Linder (03:00), (08:15), (11:45). Invocation by Pastor of the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Reverend Edward Jackson Jr. (07:20) Welcome to the University by President Satish K. Tripathi (08:30). Introductions followed by Charles Ogletree’s speech (14:40). Speech topics include: Who is Charles Ogletree? (15:00), Harvard Law School (29:00), Thurgood Marshall (34:00), family and encouraging the next generation (40:00), the killing of young people of color, gentrification, and prisons (44:45), Barack and Michelle Obama and conclusion remarks (48:30). Speech followed by a question and answer session co-moderated by Assistant Vice Provost and Director for the Cora P. Maloney College, Letitia Thomas, and Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion, Terry Miller (52:30). Questions include: How do we balance free speech and inclusion? (54:30); How do we create a dialogue? (57:30); Is there any statute of limitations on crimes against humanity? (1:01:30); What do you make of the Oscars boycotts? (1:10:50); What is your take on how the U.S. is dealing with the opioid epidemic versus the crack epidemic? (1:12:30); How does social media protect racism? (1:14:50); To come to terms with slavery, do we have to rewrite history? (1:17:30); What is your take on the presumption of personhood, especially in terms of the Black Lives Matter movement? (1:24:00); What can we do to combat gun violence? (1:26:00). What is your favorite Earth, Wind, and Fire song? (1:30:50). Video ends (1:34:52).

Processing Information

Digital files created by William Regan and the Office of Special Events were transferred to the University Archives on various types of storage media including compact discs and digital optical discs. Where possible, digital content saved on storage media was migrated from the storage media, normalized to standard preservation and access formats, and transferred to a stable preservation environment following the University Libraries' Digital Preservation guidelines. Some folder titles and file titles were altered to assist researchers in locating and identifying digital content.
