Contains digital video of actress and transgender activist Laverne Cox's September 16, 2015 appearance in Alumni Arena for the 2015-2016 Distinguished Speakers Series.

Video begins in the middle of introductory announcements, followed by a photo montage of past distinguished speakers (0:30), as well as introductions by Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion Teresa Miller (1:44) and Professor of Anthropology Dr. Timothy Chevral (4:54). Topics covered by Cox's speech (7:30) include her identity (8:56), inequality and injustice for trans people (10:00), institutional gender (11:34), growing up in Alabama (16:20), attending the Alabama School of Fine Arts (35:02), the influence of the nightclub scene in New York City during the '90s (43:19); transitioning, being misgendered, and feeling unsafe (49:11), and creating safe spaces to heal and have difficult conversations (59:09). A question and answer session follows, in which Cox answers the following questions from the audience, with some questions from Twitter fielded by Teresa Miller: What advice would you give your younger self? (1:22:20); What is your advice for correcting pronouns in casual encounters? (1:24:16); Do you feel that political correctness and "faux tolerance" have done more harm to trans issues than good? (1:26:12); What do you think is the most important takeaway from tonight, and do you think your idea is different from what your character on "Orange is the New Black" would say? (1:29:10); Will you run for president? (1:30:10).

Processing Information

Digital files created by William Regan and the Office of Special Events were transferred to the University Archives on various types of storage media including compact discs and digital optical discs. Where possible, digital content saved on storage media was migrated from the storage media, normalized to standard preservation and access formats, and transferred to a stable preservation environment following the University Libraries' Digital Preservation guidelines. Some folder titles and file titles were altered to assist researchers in locating and identifying digital content.
