Engineering Society. University of Buffalo (1939-?)

Historical Note

The Engineering Society of the University of Buffalo [ESUB] is a campus organization composed of students in the School of Engineering. Its purposes are to promote the welfare of all engineering students, to provide a social and educational program for all members, and to help advance the members towards professional development in their chosen field. It was founded in the University in 1939; this year [1950] its membership has reached a record of 734.

In keeping with this record membership, the society initiated several new projects this year. Among them was the publication of a monthly newspaper, the ESUB Journal; the showing of weekly movies in the ESUB Playhouse; the formation of the ESUB Glee Club; and the establishing of a Junior-Senior counseling system for all Engineering Freshmen.

In addition to these activities and the regular meetings, the Engineering Society repeated successful events held in previous years. These included caroling around the campus before Christmas vacation, an Engineering Open House and the Annual Engineering Spring Dance. All profits from this dance were deposited in the Engineering Scholarship Fund.

Each year, a joint committee of the ESUB officers and live faculty members meet to select the senior student who in their opinion has contributed most to the School of Engineering. In addition, certificates awarded to those members taking an unusually active part in the society. A trophy is given to the member whose participation in intramural sports seems particularly outstanding.

We of the Engineering Society believe that the engineer not only should be prepared to solve the technical problems of his profession, but should be prepared to play an active part in improving his community as well. Active participation in this society has been a step towards that end.
